Located on the slopes of the Gargano promontory, San Giovanni Rotondo is one of the most visited destinations in Puglia, known worldwide for its connection to Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. Every year, millions of pilgrims come here to visit the places of his life and gather in prayer.

But San Giovanni Rotondo is not just a spiritual center: the town offers picturesque views, a historic center rich in history, and an authentic atmosphere.

Saint Pio of Pietrelcina: the story of a beloved saint

Francesco Forgione, known to all as Padre Pio, was born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, in the province of Benevento. From a young age, he joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, dedicating his life to prayer and assisting the faithful. In 1916, he moved to San Giovanni Rotondo, where he spent the rest of his life until his death in 1968.

Padre Pio is remembered for the gift of the stigmata, the wounds of Christ that appeared on his body and made him the object of great devotion. Thousands of faithful sought him out for confession, considering him a man of great charisma and spiritual power. His fame spread worldwide, leading to his canonization in 2002 by Pope John Paul II.

Today, his memory lives on in the places that witnessed his life, from the sanctuary of Saint Pio to the Capuchin convent, both pilgrimage sites for those seeking a deep spiritual experience.

Places of faith: the sanctuary of Saint Pio and the church by Renzo Piano

The main attraction in San Giovanni Rotondo is undoubtedly the sanctuary of Saint Pio, one of the most important religious complexes in Europe. Here, visitors can find:

  • The ancient Capuchin convent, where Padre Pio lived most of his life;
  • The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, built in 1959 to accommodate the growing number of visiting faithful;
  • The church of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, designed by the architect Renzo Piano and inaugurated in 2004. It is one of the largest churches in Italy, featuring a modern structure and a vast interior that can accommodate up to 6,500 people.

Inside the sanctuary, there is a crypt containing the remains of Padre Pio, a place of devotion that welcomes thousands of visitors in prayer every day.

Near the sanctuary stands Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, the hospital founded by Saint Pio in 1956, now considered one of the most advanced medical centers in Southern Italy.

The historic center: a journey through the past

Beyond the religious sites, San Giovanni Rotondo boasts a fascinating historic center with stone alleys and panoramic views. Strolling through its streets, visitors can discover picturesque corners and visit buildings of great interest, including:

  • The church of Saint John the Baptist, the oldest in town, dating back to the 12th century;
  • San Francesco Palace, now the town hall, featuring a charming cloister;
  • The wax museum, which tells the story of Padre Pio through realistic and detailed scenes.

The town is perfect for a leisurely walk, discovering local traditions, artisan shops, and small restaurants serving typical Gargano dishes.
